Prof. Kyriakos E. Kypreos

Professor of Pharmacology, University of Patras

Kyriakos E. Kypreos is an internationally recognized pharmacologist whose work bridges the boundaries of fundamental biochemistry, lipidology, and translational pharmacology. As Chair of the Pharmacology Laboratory at the University of Patras School of Medicine, he has earned distinction as both a leading scientist and an influential mentor, guiding research that illuminates the molecular roots of metabolic and cardiovascular disease while translating these discoveries into meaningful clinical impact. Educated at the University of Crete in Greece and at Boston University School of Medicine in the USA, where he earned his Ph.D. in Biochemistry in 1998 under the supervision of Prof. Gail E. Sonenshein, Prof. Kypreos trained under some of the foremost leaders in cardiovascular biochemistry and molecular pharmacology. He went on to complete prestigious postdoctoral fellowships at the Whitaker Cardiovascular Institute at Boston University Medical Center (1998–2002) and the Department of Human Genetics at Leiden University Medical Center in the Netherlands (2002–2004). From 2001 to 2007 Prof. Kypreos served on the scientific advisory board of KOS Pharmaceuticals, during which time he was introduced to the world of Pharmacology — establishing the foundation for his lifelong research focus on the molecular pharmacology of dyslipidemia, atherosclerosis, and the metabolic syndrome. Following his postdoctoral training, Professor Kypreos joined the faculty at Boston University Chobanian and Avedisian School of Medicine, where he rose to the position of Research Assistant Professor of Medicine in 2006. Two years later, he returned to Greece to continue his academic career at the University of Patras, initially as Associate Professor of Pharmacology, before being promoted to Full Professor in December 2013. Since September 2014, he has led the Pharmacology Laboratory as its Chair, where he also founded and directs the Center for Clinical Pharmacology and Toxicology — a multidisciplinary service core facility that serves as a bridge between academia, clinical research, and the pharmaceutical industry. Prof. Kypreos’ research program focuses on the pharmacology of the metabolic syndrome, a complex constellation of conditions that includes dyslipidemia, obesity, insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and vascular inflammation. His laboratory employs an integrative, systems-level approach that combines molecular lipidology, animal models, various omics, and pharmacological testing to uncover the mechanisms linking lipid metabolism to disease. Through this work, his group has identified novel molecular targets 1 and pathways involved in high-density lipoprotein (HDL) function, apolipoprotein metabolism, and atherosclerosis, contributing valuable insights into the development of next-generation therapeutics for cardiovascular and metabolic diseases. Most recently he developed an interest in Artificial Intelligence in Pharmacology and is currently overseeing the execution of a project funded by the Hellenic Ministry of Education on this subject. The impact of Prof. Kypreos’s research extends far beyond his laboratory. His projects have been supported by major competitive grants from the European Union, Greek national research programs, and international funding bodies. Prof. Kypreos’s distinguished career has been marked by numerous honors and appointments that reflect his influence in the field. He is both an EMBO Fellow and a Marie Curie Fellow, distinctions reserved for researchers with exceptional promise and impact in European science. Among his most notable recognitions is the Irvine H. Page Atherosclerosis Research Award, granted by the Arteriosclerosis, Thrombosis, and Vascular Biology (ATVB) Council of the American Heart Association, recognizing his pioneering early contributions to lipid metabolism and vascular biology. In addition to his research accomplishments, Professor Kypreos plays an active leadership role in national and international scientific organizations. Past positions include the Hellenic National Committee on Pharmacovigilance under the Greek Ministry of Health, the Hellenic Medicines Evaluation and Reimbursement Committee (HTA committee), and the Executive Committee of the Hellenic Atherosclerosis Society, affiliated with the European Atherosclerosis Society. His influence extends to the scientific publishing community as a member of the editorial boards of the American Journal of Physiology – Endocrinology & Metabolism, the Journal of Biomedical Research, and Nutrients. A dedicated educator, Professor Kypreos teaches a wide array of courses at the University of Patras as well as other European Universities and Research centers, including topics of Molecular and Clinical Pharmacology, Toxicology, Pharmacovigilance, and Evaluation of the quality of clinical evidence for medicinal products. He is known for integrating current research trends into his teaching, ensuring that students understand both the scientific foundations and the translational implications of pharmacology. Beyond classroom instruction, he has supervised numerous master, doctoral, and postdoctoral researchers, many of whom have gone on to successful academic and industrial careers worldwide. Internationally, Professor Kypreos maintains an extensive network of collaborations with laboratories across Europe and North America. His scholarly output is encompasses a large 2 number of peer-reviewed publications in high-impact journals covering basic and clinical lipidology and pharmacology. Prof. Kypreos’ research has been widely cited, and his digital identifiers reflect his strong scientific presence. Prof. Kypreos’ most current publication record is publicly available at PubMed. Updated statistics on his published work may be found on google scholar or scopus.
